3 Ways to Begin Preparing for Hurricane Season

As Hurricane Harvey hit the coast of Texas in August of 2017, no one was prepared for the destruction that would take place. As we reflect on the impact Harvey had, one thing stands out: We all need to be better prepared! It is important for families to be prepared for what could happen. Being prepared ensures better use of resources in the time of need.

  1. Have a plan in place. It is important to have a plan in place for you and your family. FEMA has extensive resources to help your family create the best plan possible. This link connects you to resources that can get the right plan in place for you. A critical part of that plan is being aware of possible flood risks in your area.
  2. Have emergency supplies on hand. Having supplies on hand prior to the event is a critical piece of your Hurricane Preparedness Plan. When Harvey hit, we saw shortages on items like water, food, and gasoline.By stocking up on water, nonperishable foods, flashlights, and filling your gasoline tanks you will be ready to survive for several days. Check out FEMA’s resources for what to have on hand.
  3. Ask questions and get involved. During Harvey, TEXSAR was inundated with citizens wanting to help and get involved. TEXSAR does not work with spontaneous volunteers. We require all of our volunteers to be trained and certified in SAR disciplines in order to deploy. So now is the time to ask questions and get started! Contact our team to learn how to join TEXSAR. Joining TEXSAR will allow you to be a major asset to your community’s resources, and hopefully prepare your family for disasters.

We cannot stress enough the importance of doing your research now while there is time. We know hurricanes will happen, it is just a matter of when and how hard they will hit.
